Represented South Africa in Europe for rowing before he was appointed National Coach of the South African Olympic Rowing Squad for the Atlanta, Sydney, London and Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Received an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012 as a coach of the South African rowing team

Bishop Malinga holds a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard University. She previously served as the Deputy President of the South African Council of Churches, the Chairperson of the KZN Council of Churches, a member of the Diakonia Council of Churches and also as a lecturer at the Federal Theological Seminary and John Wesley College. In May 2019, she was elected as the 100th Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. Rev Purity Malinga was elected as the first female Presiding Bishop of the MCSA.
