Terry Ryan was St Stithians first national sportsman.
Ryan joined the tennis circuit in the 1960s, reaching #100 in the rankings in June, 1974. Notably, he pushed Arthur Ashe to five sets when they met in the second round of the 1969 Wimbledon Championships. He won the first two sets before the fifth seeded American came back to win and ultimately make the semi-finals.
He reached the 3rd round of the men’s singles at the French Open twice: in 1968 and 1971 and similarly at Wimbledon in 1966 and 1970. He reached the 2nd round of the US Open in 1966.
In 1971 he partnered with Zeljko Franulovic to make the 4th round of the men's doubles at the French Open, then teamed up with Jimmy Connors at that year's US Open and reached the third round. His best singles results on the Grand Prix circuit were quarter-final appearances at Eastbourne in 1971 and Newport, Wales in 1973.
