Barry was selected to attend the World Pool Lifesaving Championships in Bulgaria in 1970, his Grade 12 year. He was also selected to the shadow Springboks at the 1970 Nationals in Kimberley. He received his Saints Honours blazers for this. Unfortunately, the prevailing political climate in South Africa prevented the team from attending the Championships in Bulgaria.
